The summer heat in Barcelona makes any contact with water a joy, and it’s no surprise that despite being city beaches, it’s fight-for-your-towel-space down at Barceloneta and the Olympic Village beaches in high season. So where else can you splash down for a swim in the city? Well, you just might be surprised.

Montjüic mountain flanks the Barcelona Metropolis to the right as you look at the sea, and also played host to the hugely successful Olympic Games in 1992. A short trip up the Funicular railway line takes you to the Piscina Municipal de Montjüic, the location of the Olympic Diving events, and quite possibly the most picturesque swimming pool in Europe with a panoramic view of the sprawling city below. This pool has seating inclined into the hill, but is fairly large and is open to the public during the months of July and August from around 11am until 6:30pm. Also in the same area is the second free outdoor swimming pool used in the Olympic Games, just next to the Palau Sant Jordi – a versatile events venue also used for the Olympic Games. Open week long from 9am till 8/9pm.

Switching downtown and the Eixample area of the city is a grid-like extension to the old town (Eixample means “widening”) with square blocks of apartments accompanying the Modernista architecture from the likes of Gaudi and Muntaner I Domenech. These squares are often empty, and filled with car parking spaces, or establishments such as car garages and mechanics. So the block at Carrer diputacio and Roger de Lluria is so special, it’s been dubbed the Eixample’s beach. This is the location of the Gardens of the Water Tower, or El Jardi dela Torre de les Aigües. Built in 1987, this is basically the old water board plant which has its remaining tower, and now houses a sandy “beach” with a bridge and is a great spot for kids and families. From June to September, you can escape to the beach without leaving the city centre for as little as 1,40 €

A little further out but still in the north of Barcelona, just above the UNESCO World Heritage Sit of Gaudi’s Park Güell, but well worth the trip, is Parc Creueta de Coll. This site is actually an old granite quarry in the rising hills of Barcelona, but is now a large park which houses a lake used in the summer as a pool. Entrance is 4,40 € although cheaper for the younger ones, and also has some great palm trees and greenery around about, as well as table tennis tables, basketball rings and a petanca court (like bowls).

Barcelona is great for shopping. The Catalan Capital has one of the biggest “shopping areas” marked on your Barcelona map, and designated by the Barcelona City Council, and there used to be a “Shopping Line” which was a free bus taking you 5 kilometres and covering some of the 35,000 shops in the city. Many of the biggest Spanish brands such as Custo, Zara, Desigual have prime spots along Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gracia and other select locations sitting side by side with the likes of high street brands such as H & M, and more exclusive boutiques – the likes of Armani, Fendi, Gucci, Calvin Klein, etc.

However, one often overlooked aspect of the city’s shopping is books. Barcelona is a great place to buy books, and not just Spanish or Catalan books – there are some great English sources to find, too.

Books are also big business in Barcelona. The Patron Saint of Catalonia is Saint George, and on the 23rd April – Saint George’s Day and a national holiday in Catalonia – it is tradition for boys to present a rose to the girls, representing the blood of the slain dragon. And what do the boys receive in return? A book – the 23rd April is also the anniversary of Spain’s most famous Author, Miguel Cervantes, whose works include the fantastic “Don Quixote de La Mancha”.  The city’s streets fill up with mobile bookstores, and the famous Las Ramblas is a mass of coloured roses. So where to go if you want to find some good books?

A great place to start would be FNAC, at the top of Las Ramblas, inside “El Triangle” at Plaça Catalunya – the city’s main square. The French chain is along the lines of a HMV, or a Virgin Megastore, and stocks DVDs, CDs’ and a fairly impressive bookstore, including a great travel section and a fair amount of English books, too.

Just a short walk away and another great stop for books is “Portal del Angel” street – real fans of Barcelona literature could even take a shortcut through Carrer Santa Ana, which was the home of leading character “Daniel” in Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s bestseller “The Shadow of the Wind”. Here you can find the Spanish Chain Store “El Corte Inglés” whose book collection also has an impressive English collection of reference and non-fiction. Continue down towards the inner winding walkways of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona and “Happy Books” speaks for itself and has a few shops within the city itself.

Away from the old town into Poble Sec neighbourhood also houses a real gem – Elephant,  a second hand English bookstore where you can come and exchange old novels and pick up some great new ones, too.

Moving on to some of the rest of the bookstores in Barcelona (not necessarily English, or with a good English collection), then BCN Books also has a good collection of books over 3 stores in downtown Barcelona, and “Casa del  Libro” (the Book house, or house of books) also dates as far back as 1923. Finally, if it’s travel books you’re looking for, then look no further than Altair on Gran Via, number 616. This extremely central bookstore has everything you can think of with regards to world travel, anthropology, geography and is a great place to compare.

If I had a euro for the amount of times I’ve been asked where the best place/area to go out in Barcelona is, then I’d have enjoyed a good few nights out on that myself. My answer is always the same – that Barcelona is not a resort and has one “hill” ala Magaluf or the like. Barcelona is a city like any other large European city and has various areas or zones you can hit depending on your music tastes, budget, appetite for locals or tourist traps and ability to last the night long. Catalan nights start – and finish – very late. Don’t expect to be in a club before around 1am, as you’ll be the only ones there enjoying the air-con and a cocktail. So I’m going to give it a go at sorting out the best places to go out in Barcelona, although with such a constantly changing scene, this might need updating frequently!

A quick lowdown on hitting the town in the Catalan Capital first: Bars tend to open early, but don’t start to fill up until around 10pm. They generally close at around 3am. Clubs open at 1am and close at 6am, where another set of “afters” open till around 12midday, and so on. If you want to keep partying in Barcelona, there are plenty of places to go, fear not. Entrance to a club may be free, or if you pay, you’ll usually get a free drink with that “una consumision” so don’t screw up the ticket and put it in your back pocket – head to the bar.

Port Olympic. This purpose built area was where the athletes were housed during the 1992 Olympic Games, and is home top the Casino and a couple of great spots. There’s a strip of bars on one side of Frank Gehry’s bronze fish sculpture but I don’t usually recommend them, as they never really quite get going (there’s a strip of restaurants directly in front who don’t want the noise) and they have different prices for drinks for men (more expensive) and women. No, head behind the Casino for 3 great places. The advantage of these clubs is that they have been purpose built, and can show off MTV studio style furniture and much better sound systems that the old town haunts which have been converted from basement factories and the like. “Opium Mar” has moved from downtown to occupy the old Baja Beach joint, and is right next to the very Feng shui “Shôko” – also a fusion restaurant, mixing Mediterranean cuisine with Oriental influences. And adjacent to Shôko is Club Catwalk which offers R&B and HipHop upstairs and mainstream house downstairs. Perhaps the best club along this strip however, is Patrick Kluivert’s Carpe Diem Lounge Club – CDLC. This is the place that hosts the after parties for the Formula 1 in Barcelona and is definitely the place to be seen.

If you fancy something a little less touristy, then head up to the zone around Mariano Cubi. This is actually just a street with a fair few bars, but is an almost exclusively Catalan crowd, so if you fancy the locals night, head on down to this area. Pick of the bunch are Bubblic, Universal and Bar Breston. After these close, most head round to Otto Zutz which is again more of a Spanish crowd.

Head downtown into the old town, and you’re spoiled for choice. A hub for those on a bar crawl is the Plaça Reial, half way down Las Ramblas, housing the great Pipas bar, Jamboree, Glaciar, Sidecar and Café Reial. One street above on Ferran is the place to go for Big screens and Irish draughts. The quiet man on the opposite side of Las Ramblas in the Raval is a great place to shoot some pool over a pint, and tucked away on Carrer Sitges just of Tallers is the Black Sheep, serving pitchers of ale or Sangria with big trestle tables and a meeting point for travellers and locals alike. Many of my best nights out in Barcelona started here.
