Today you join an exclusive club, with 2 million others, including the White House staffs of four U.S. Presidents. These people have the Competitive Edge over their peers in the areas of knowledge and learning. The primary benefit of Speedlearning 100 for both college and graduate-school students is Acing your courses and exams. In your career,SpeedLearners are placed on the Fast-Track for promotions because they are Masters of Learning and Knowledge, and have practical strategies for success. 2.Since your eyes move over the words, and do not rest your eye to read word by word, you will automatically learn to fill in the gaps. In time not only do you learn to read faster, but also comprehend the information faster, which helps in increasing your recall abilities. There are many different kinds of reading material to select when learning how to speed read, but one of the best types to consider is a book with solid material. To train the brain to read at a faster rate, a book containing less ‘flowery’ language is highly recommended. This is because a book with concrete information consists of fewer repeated and redundant words, which adds to a slower rate of gathering information and details. Lizard! (widen your eye-span to include peripheral vision) while reading not only permits you to triple (3x) your learning speed, it improves your brain functions. There is new research in September 2007 to confirm reducing up to 40% your risk of Alzheimer, and increase your potential for an additional nine years of longevity.
Both doctors spent the entire weekend with us learning speed reading strategies. By the end of day-1, both physicians had doubled their reading speed, without any loss of comprehension. After they completed the second day?s six hours, both were reading three-times faster than their original starting speed, and their comprehension had improved about 10%. It is irrelevant that they doubled their memory.
That means there is proof meditation can modify the structure and function of our neural networks. Davidson offers his opinion that these positive changes are permanent. As you work on this, you will soon find that you begin to process the words in your mind, an area called ‘thought stream’ rather than your tongue or throat. Through speed-reading you can keep pace with your thinking speed without any brakes in the form of ‘skip backs’. This greatly enhances your reading and comprehension skills. It is then upto you to go and read the relevant books before preparing an essay. The tutorial is an opportunity to refine your arguments and understanding rather than be taught the material. In the recent years several extensive studies have proven the connection between certain vitamins and minerals and proper brain functioning. Sugar for example, provides temporary quick stimulant but fades very soon after that (hour or two), and what is more when sugar rush fades we often feel even more tired and sluggish then before. Our brain works the same, if you were to feed it only with candy bars you would not get much mileage from it, and you would experience often crashes. When college students are able to prioritize the text they must read before a heavy test, they can increase the speed at which they complete their studies.
Student College Grants offered by the federal governments
There is hot news for the ones aiming for a college career; but could not do it because of economical hazards. Government grants will provide the opportunity. Students can obtain college grants which provide money to compensate for tuition and other expenses during college career. In the economic climate of today, a college degree is worth shooting for and the college grant gives you the right chance if you cannot afford it on your own.
Federal College Grants are offered up to those who are needy. Yet it is different based upon the area of study and level of academic excellence. Deprived scholars who can never aspire of going after academic classes are benefitted by the college grants. These are given on a semester or annual basis. In some instances, the scholarship extended to the pupils is not needed to be returned back like the Pell Grant Program which is a federal college grant. There are some terms to be satisfied before this grant is accredited. Each applier must be a US citizen, have a GED or high school diploma and must be able to win over their need for financial help.
The federal government has evolved a measure to estimate the eligibility of a student to draw the profits of a college grant. The financial condition is looked at. These factors are- properties and income of the pupil if individual, similar data for parents for dependent educatee – family size and number of members of the family entered for post-secondary institutions. These elements being widely various, the amount of grant varies depending on the actual need in personal cases. To get an idea of the scale of college grant, it may be stated that in the 2009-2010 school academic year, the maximum scholarship to be granted is $5,350.
The federal government has evolved a new grant called ACG or Academic Competitiveness Grant in 2006. It is awarded to the primary 2 years of post secondary study. It is awarded to such students who have adopted an difficult work load of studies in their final year at the school. This college grant is of the order of $750 for the first study year and $1,300 for the second year.
Minorities grant is granted to the students in USA. Among the other grants are the Los Padres Foundation, United Negro College fund.etc. College scholarships are also available for women.
Notting Hill College: Success through Partnership
If you’re looking to start or develop your own enterprise in the field of continuing education, you would do well to consider Notting Hill College and the business openings this growing institution offers. Whether you’re a fledgling entrepreneur or established course provider, the College fosters an array of opportunities for mutual business development that should not be overlooked. Notting Hill College is a British based institution specialising in further education and vocational training. Since its inception in 2004 the College has rapidly expanded its global reach thanks in no small part to its unusually successful franchising network. In this and other areas the key to NHC’s remarkable rise seems to be its genuinely people-centred ethos, which enables it to embrace policies that are mutually beneficial for the mother organisation and its partners and franchisees. The College is more than just a business however, and its people-centred attitude is reflected in its programmes, methodology and materials. Joining the College’s network of Partners, Agents and Accredited Course Providers is therefore a truly cooperative venture. Perhaps the most promising of the openings that Notting Hill College offers is what it dubs its Unique Business Opportunity. Aimed at potential partner centres, this venture represents a short-cut into the higher echelons of three lucrative and intrinsically trans-national training fields: language training, teacher training and business and soft skills training. Partners are expected to deliver Notting Hill College courses from one or more of the above fields, using syllabi and course materials exclusive to the College. In addition to access to these core training resources, NHC Partners are also provided with substantial support in setting up and running their centres that goes far beyond the usual technical guides and corporate identity manuals. Rather, franchisees are assigned a dedicated Business Development Manager who is available to provide technical, marketing and other support in person when necessary. The whole process is made refreshingly easy thanks to the online systems Notting Hill College already has in place for the benefit of its network. These include a Learning Management System for students, an Online Operational System for the use of NHC Partner Centres and an Online Administration System for Master Franchisees. Collectively these online systems drastically reduce the resources required to manage training centres efficiently and effectively so that they meet the high standards of customer service that the College has already established for itself. It goes without saying that NHC Partners also benefit from association with the College as a market-leading training provider with a flawless reputation, growing stature and mounting accolades for innovation. This takes the form of direct promotion via links on the College’s main website – a virtual hub for potential learners worldwide – as well as the more subtle influence of branding and design. Another venture worth considering, especially for established training providers, is accrediting your courses for credit transfer into Notting Hill College’s Master of Arts in TEFL. Again this enables you to buy into the College’s global reach and internationally respected status. Moreover, it gives your students and potential students access to a cutting-edge higher education teacher training programme that fills what has until recently been a striking gap in the TEFL market. Notting Hill College is an organisation that is clearly going places and in the spirit of twenty first century global partnership, it’s not closing the door behind it but opening doors for others to follow. Perhaps the most compelling thing about the College, though, is that it has maintained the integrity of its aims and methodology whilst hosting such a broad range of training solutions under its umbrella. Students of business will agree that such strongly articulated aims are gold dust in respect of the limitless potential opportunities today’s global market affords.

Electoral College Map With Numbers
Is it time to junk the Electoral College? By formulating such an arcane method of electing the executive, the founding fathers hoped to insulate the presidency from popular emotions while, at the same time, protecting thinly populated states from domination by the great cities. The College works by having the state legislatures pick people to vote for the President. Each state has the number of electors as it has representatives to the congress, both House and Senate. These were to be the most able people of the state…in theory. What quickly evolved was that each party would nominate a slate of electors. The political party that won the state’s popular vote would have their slate of electors get the right to vote for President. A “win” was considered 50% plus one vote This has been the method of electing our Presidents since the founding of the republic. There have been consequences not intended by the founders. They have shaped what kind of party system we have. The structure of elections has determined the ways campaigns are run. They have even affected the way in which our government is organized. The “winner-take-all” system also shapes the campaign. Since only one vote more than the competing party is required, there is no reason to give campaign resources to states where a particular candidate is well ahead or too far behind to compete. The battlegrounds are those states that could go either way. In a tight campaign the votes of small states become critical in putting together an electoral majority. Because a state’s entire electoral vote is determined by which party gets one vote more than the next, there is no advantage in voting for a party that will come short of that goal. Ten percent means no vote at all. It makes sense then that we have two parties because that’s the surest way to win the privilege of casting the electoral vote. While third parties might have influence at the state level, it is almost impossible to have an effect at the Presidential level. A popular-vote election means Presidential candidates no longer visiting small, closely contested states. It reduces their influence. The electoral wars will be waged only in the large cities. The changes don’t stop there. Remember, we now nominate candidates by state primaries. Electing people by a national popular vote would cause those to merge into a national primary. After all, if states no longer elect the President, why should they nominate the candidate? There’s a whole new national campaign. college map college map A popular election of the President would change that. No longer would a national campaign be necessary. A President, political scientists tell us, could be elected in the six largest TV. markets. Campaigns would be waged in the large cities and their suburbs. Rural areas would be completely ignored. That is especially true for Democrats. The parties would spend their resources in those areas where they are already strong. Political professionals know it’s easier to expand the percentage of your vote in places you’re already ahead. That is seen today. Republicans don’t waste their resources in mainly African-American areas. Nor do the Democrats campaign in strong Republican precincts. The process has become longer and more expensive. But, that’s not the end. Would a party want its candidate to be one with only, say, 20% of the vote? Probably not. A national run-off primary will evolve to insure one candidate wins 50%.. Another problem now rears its ugly head…the national election. Recall that the Electoral College and the winner-take-all system forced the parties to campaign state by state. Since only a one-vote majority was required to carry that state, third parties found it impossible to exist. They could never have an influence. Not so with a popular vote election. Here a small party getting fifteen or twenty percent could have a large impact on who is elected. In fact, the vote could be spread among several small political parties. Would the nation be content with the President being elected with, say, 30% of the popular vote? Maybe not. There is a way around the problem. The old One-Party-Democratic-South solved it. It’s called the run-off election. Now there are four possible national campaigns: the first national primary, the run-off national primary, the national election, and the run-off national election. Another effect is one that strikes at the government itself. It’s likely that a multi-party system would evolve with elected officials from many different small ideological groups. How would the government work? Our national government is organized around two parties. Could it accommodate coalitions? There is no way to tell. All of the governments that have multi-party systems are Cabinet governments. There are built in mechanisms for bringing down the government and holding new elections when the governing coalition loses public support. Our constitution has no provision for such a circumstance. It’s possible the popular election of the President would force the U. S. to completely change its government from a Presidential to a Cabinet form. Some people argue that would be a good thing. It would, they say, make the government more responsive. They’re right. But, it would also make it unstable. Our constitution creates government that is slow to respond because the framers wanted ideas to have time for thorough review and debate before they were made into national policy.
Starting college
Starting college is a big milestone in anyone’s life. In some
families, starting college is almost like getting married – it’s
a big step, a giant move towards independence. Everything that
happens during college counts towards the future – that’s why
it’s so important for students to start college on the right
footing.
First of all, see if you have everything all pinned down before
you start college. If your college is going to be quite a
distance away from home, you’ll need to find a place to stay.
And if you’ve already found a place to stay, you’ll need to find
roommates who can share the rent with you. You’re only starting
college and finances are going to be tight – with someone
sharing the place with you, you can bring the expenses down.
The next thing that you have to decide on before starting
college is the mode of transportation. Your options are…college
car, a motorcycle or a bicycle. The mode of transportation
depends on how far you are going to be housed from the college.
If you’re within college campus, you can probably start with a
bicycle. If you’re located outside the college campus, you might
need a car to get you around.
Next, go shopping for college clothes. A whole new wardrobe is
necessary only if you are moving to a place where the weather is
very different from where you live, for example, your home is in
Maine and your college California. Otherwise, you can probably
live with what you already have in your wardrobe. If you don’t
know the kind of clothes you will need for college, why not
factor the cost of a new wardrobe into your starting college
funds. You can go do some shopping when you’ve started college.
Living on your own and starting college also means that you’ll
have to do some calculations on the use of kitchen utensils
(getting some of your own is a good idea), and also some
entertainment. Yes, you’re starting college but you still need
to have some fun once in a while.
Starting college means that you’re probably going to need your
own computer, printer and scanner too. Most colleges have these
facilities in their college campus. The options are:- buy new
ones if you can afford it before you start college, buy
second-hand ones, loan one from your relatives or parents, use
the ones available in college or pay for the services in
Internet cafes where these facilities are widely available.
Research the area near the college and see if there’s a need to
get your own electronics. If you can save the money for
something else, you can start college without it and use the
ones in the college first.
If you have reasons to want to move tables, beds, furniture and
shelves from home, this could save your parents some money.
Starting college is already ripping the bank accounts apart, so,
if you can save on furniture, why not? If you’re bringing the
furniture from home, find a relocating service contractor to
help you move the furniture to your new place.
Most importantly, before starting college, you’ll need to get a
list from your college so that you can purchase the books before
college starts. It is best that you start college on the right
footing, so, don’t wait until all the books are gone.

The first step – Finding out about college loan consolidation
We might think that for a regular college student the main concern is to attend classes, study for exams and turn in the papers before the deadlines. However, this is not the case in North America. The students in the United States and Canada have to deal with quite complicated financial decisions throughout their years of higher education. The reason is that higher education in these countries is provided by private institutions, which offer quality education but at quite spicy costs. In these conditions, students and their families have to face tough financial decisions when they choose a college to attend. For most of them, the fees are too expensive so the first step is to try obtaining a full scholarship or partial financial aid. For the rest of the expenses, there is the widespread option of contracting a college loan.
Students can contract more than one college loan during their four years of college. If they also pursue graduate studies, it is likely that they will end up with a collection of college loans that they end up paying back for many years after graduation. It thus turns out that a college loan is not something you leave behind at graduation, along with all the other college stories, but it is a life-long commitment. The practice of contracting a college loan is so common that an entire business has developed around it covering financial and legal services for the loan contractors.
A college loan can be offered by either a governmental agency or by a private company that takes care of such financial services. If the student contracts all his student loans from the government, than he can use the option of college loan consolidation. College loan consolidation is extremely advantageous because it actually means replacing a whole set of different loans with various interest rates with just one loan having a unique rate. The main benefit of college loan consolidation is that it gives the chance to lock in the interest rate at its current value (the value at the time when the consolidation is made) thus offsetting changes in interest rates taking place over the next years, when the loan is being repaid. Nowadays, all recent graduates are advised to pursue college loan consolidation as soon as they can because rates for college loans are at an all time low and they will not remain so for too lone. Doing college loan consolidation now means that the student makes sure he or she will pay the same low rate for the following ten or more years, although interest rates for college loans may increase by 10% or more in this period.
College loan consolidation is most commonly done by recent graduates, who are starting to face the difficulties of starting to pay back the loans. Usually, during the college years, the government will subsidize the payment of the rates for students. During the first six months after graduation, young people can still be saved the trouble of having to think about college loan consolidation because they are given a grace period during which no payments should be made. The wisest of them start thinking about college loan consolidation in this time though. They consider alternative options and decide which scheme for college loan consolidation is most beneficial for them. College loan consolidation may be a tough decision to make, the financial packages offered include details that may be tedious to follow and understand. That is why recent graduates may end up postponing thinking about it. However, they are being pressured more and more to become responsible and do college loan consolidation now because of the low interest rates they should be taking advantage of.
While it is most common for recent graduates to worry about loan consolidation, for better informed students there is also the option of in-school consolidation loan. School consolidation loan means exactly that students can put their loans together during the college years. School consolidation loan has become more of an issue nowadays precisely because of the current low interest rates. Current college students also wanted to have the option of locking in these low rates (by graduation time, the rates will already have increased). That is how the option of school consolidation loan became more and more widespread. It is interesting to see how many of the present college students will be able to collect enough information and dedicate their time to get into a school consolidation loan program. Many colleges have started coming up with the option of offering counseling for school consolidation loans because they are aware of the difficulty of the task and of the tendency of college students to procrastinate on such issues. In many cases, it is the parents who take over the task of dealing with the school consolidation loan, which makes sense too especially because in many cases it is still the parents who help college students deal with their financial burdens.
The intricacies of school consolidation loan force college students to face the financial and legal difficulties of adult life in the US earlier on. Perhaps the colleges should start thinking about offering an introductory class on these issues… It is very important that teenagers of all ages, including college students, receive an education regarding the financial reality and how a college loan consolidation could help them. After all, it is not fair to take advantage of the young and inexperienced.
Don?T Let The Economic Crisis Derail Your College Plans
The current economic crisis may have students and families thinking that a college education is out of grasp. But before you give up on your plans to pursue a college education consider the following strategies:
1) Develop A College Funding Plan— College planning really is a family undertaking. Families should be having open and honest discussions about college plans, career interests, what the parents can reasonably contribute to college expenses and what contribution the child may be expected to make starting when their child is a high school junior. Make it clear if the child is expected to work during the summer and/or school year to pay for college or take out student loans. Will the parents be willing to assist in the repayment of those student loans? Revisit the plan annually or as circumstances change. This is particularly important in an economic environment such as we are experiencing now.
2) Meet & Greet with the Financial Aid Director—When there is a sudden change in the family’s financial situation, such as a loss of a job, foreclosure or bankruptcy, the family should make an appointment with the Financial Aid Director or Associate/Assistant Director ( the decision makers) at the college the child will be/is attending. Financial Aid Administrators have the ability to make professional judgment adjustments with documentation, which will take in to account these circumstances. Often this provides the student additional financial aid or makes a student eligible for aid who may not have originally qualified. I have many times used professional judgment for such circumstances, as a Director of Financial Aid. In the case of a job loss the family would need to provide a copy of the layoff letter and provide a copy of any anticipated unemployment benefits. When a family has experienced a foreclosure, the family would also need to provide documentation showing the foreclosure.
3) Consider Attending College In-State— Families struggling with finances whose child was planning to attend an out –of- state college, may want to work with their child to find a college that is in -state and within commuting distance, thus saving on room and board costs.
4) Strike A Deal With Your Child— In cases where the child is really determined to attend his or her first choice college, I have known parents who have worked out agreements, where the parents will pay for the tuition and require the student to take on the responsibility of paying for room and board, through financial aid, scholarship and part-time jobs. Many colleges have student employment offices that assist students in finding on-campus and off-campus employment, in addition to work-study jobs that students may be awarded as part of their financial aid package.
5) Go Public—Another option is attending a state college or university for the undergraduate degree. This is a particularly savvy financial move, when a student intends to pursue a graduate degree. Here again parents and the child may work out a plan where the parents pay for a bachelor’s degree at a state college and the child pays for the graduate degree. Keep in mind that community colleges are a great bargain and the credits are generally transferrable to a 4 year public or private college.
6) Adopt A State —Thinking of attending an out-of-state public college? If you establish legal residency in your “adopted” state by registering to vote or getting a driver’s license, you could qualify for in-state tuition. Find out from the financial aid office the in-state residency requirement to get the in-state tuition rates. Generally you need to live in the state for 6 or 12 months prior to qualifying for in-state rates. This requirement is differs in each state.
7) Read Your Employee Handbook— If a student plans to pursue a graduate degree part-time while working fulltime, a good way to fund it would be through the student’s employer. Most employers will pay for courses that relate to the employee’s career. So if you work in accounting and want to earn an MBA or pursue CPA certification, the employer would generally assist with those courses. Some employers will pay for other courses, but at a reduced rate. Most employer education benefits are paid as reimbursements once you successfully complete the class. So you would need to come up with the tuition at the beginning of the semester. Applying for a Federal Stafford Loan would be the best choice, if you did not have the funds up front. You would be reimbursed once you submit an official copy of you course grade. Check with the HR department at your company for specifics on the company’s program.
Make It a Family Affair— In some families, grandparents (or other relatives) have stepped up and assisted children with some of the college costs. I would counsel relatives in this situation to consult with their financial planner or tax consultant before pursuing this option to minimize tax liability.
9) Go Virtual— Students may also be able to reduce college costs by taking some of their courses online. Many private and public colleges are offering online courses and degree programs. In Massachusetts, the state colleges offer a variety of courses through Massachusetts Colleges Online at www.mco.org. These courses can be used towards a degree not only at Massachusetts state colleges and universities, they may be transferrable to private colleges or out-of-state public colleges. As with any transfer courses, students should check with the Registrar at the college to which they would like to transfer the credit to ensure that it would be accepted, before signing up for the course.
10) Search Out Discounted Tuition— New Englanders should look into the Tuition Break program through the New England Board of Higher Education. Through this program, for example, Massachusetts students are eligible for reduced tuition at out- of -state New England state colleges and universities in 250 approved programs. These are degree programs that are not available at Massachusetts public colleges. The NEBHE website, www.nebhe,org, has a FAQ page and a list of all programs that each New England states’ residents are eligible to attend at discounted rates at the other regional state colleges. These rates are discounts on the out- state- tuition rates that would otherwise be charged. The NEBHE site states that students who have used this program have saved on average $7,000 annually.
11) Take A Sibling to College— If two or more family members attend the same college ( siblings, spouses, or parent & child) some private colleges offer family discounts for each additional family member that are enrolled in the college. Check the catalogue or with the Bursar’s Office on campus.
12) Consider A Career (Or At Least A Job) In Education— One of the advantages of working for a college is that they provide educational benefits not only for employees but for employees’ dependents (spouses & children). So if you or your child is considering attending a local college, consider a job change.
Calendar Men: How to Publish a Calendar Featuring Hot College Guys at your University
INSPIRATION AND PERSPIRATION!
Ever thought of putting together a pinup calendar featuring hot guys enrolled at your college or university?
Most people who think of creating a “Men of (Your) University” calendar assume that all they need to do is locate only 12 hunky college males and have them photographed. These tasks must be accomplished. But there’s much more to publishing a calendar and many more than 12 college guys must be recruited.
Besides recruiting, selecting, and training your student male models, there is production of the actual calendar, which includes photography, arranging graphic design and commercial printing. After the calendars are delivered, news media publicity must be arranged. Promotional events must be held. And, of course, your pinup calendar must be marketed!
But, first, the best-looking campus guys at your university or college must be recruited. After a decade of publishing, recruiting of college men, the Campus Men Calendar operation has learned a great deal and refined its approach. So, here are the facts:
GUYS WANT TO DO IT!
There is a high demand to appear in pinup calendars of college men. Publishers should be able to choose from many college guys. Therefore, do not cater to, or try to convince any one college student to appear. Either they want to appear in your calendar or they do not! Students who need special handling often drag their feet and cause delays. Delays cost in potential sales. Therefore, students who expect you to cater to them, cost you sales.
BEWARE OF GIRLFRIENDS!
Beware of any college guy who involves his girlfriend into your operation. Why? Because girlfriends do not truly want their boyfriends to “model.” Yes, they want their boyfriend to be “good looking” and for his looks to be “model quality,” but they really do not want them going on photo shoots, meeting female models and certainly do not want the competition that is generated from having their boyfriend’s body being advertised to other females by appearing in a calendar.
When it comes time to choose the best calendar photograph, girlfriends can spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E. A revealing photograph may be threatening to a girlfriend. When it comes to their bodies, guys want to “show it off.” Girlfriends want their men under wraps.
If you hold a promotional event after the calendar is released, any controlling girlfriend will either want to attend the event or will encourage your model not to attend. Remember, you cannot replace a model once the calendar is printed. You will only be able to select from the batch of 12 who appear in the calendar. That means if five guys are unreliable, you only have seven to choose from. How many of those seven will be working at their job during your event? If you convince a bar owner to hold an event, but only have one model show up, you might be in big trouble and possibly owe the bar owner for their advertising costs. If no models show up at a retail store that carries your calendar, you just might loose that store as an outlet!
In summary, chose independent-minded males.
SEX STILL SELLS?
The theme of the calendar drives which students should be recruited and selected. At Campus Men, we chose a theme that was developed after years of trial and error. Our theme was to present young, all-American college guys in sensual poses.
Your photos should answer the question of: I wonder what that incredible-looking guy I saw on campus would look like in bed? If a publisher wants to sell calendars, it is foolish to feature college men wearing sweaters. Publish photographs of guys wearing suits, fully clothed or face shots only – and you will not be returning to the market with a calendar the second year. If you want to sell calendars, appeal to the sexual motivations of the viewer, whether through a cute smile, great face or body or skimpy clothing. Attempt to give the viewer a fantasy of what it is like to be intimate with the college student.
You do not have to depict models fully nude with penis showing. Snug-fitting boxer briefs (or less) are just as exciting. Many guys will readily show their bare buttocks. By choosing students who are exhibitionists versus guys who are conservative, you give yourself valuable creative freedom when it comes time to photograph these college male models. Choose a male student who obsesses about which poses he will not pose for, versus choosing a young guy who is grateful for the opportunity you are offering, and you will undoubtedly find the production process more difficult.
Remember, there are thousands of students enrolled at your university. Why choose the ones who do not care about your profitability? You will find that buyers will remark on the one or two provocative photos that appear in your finished calendar. “Skin” photos draw more e-mails and sell more copies.
Campus Men learned this by accident. Gus Dakis posed for what our male model photographer calls a “miracle photograph” because the photo shoot was hastily put together due to bad weather. Gus and our photographer sped off to the photo shoot location and set up equipment as the rain still dripped from gutters around the pool house.
Yet, once set up, there was still no sun, which was needed for the photograph. Gus stood in exact position under the showerhead and our photographer stood by with his camera, continuously measuring light readings. Just as they decided to wrap it up and go home without taking any photos, the sun fell below the clouds, engulfing the pool area in a beautiful, brilliant deep gold color. A half roll of film was snapped off before the sun fell beyond the horizon.
Surprisingly, Gus’ photograph, which was created in two and one-half minutes, became the most popular image in Campus Men that year and was responsible for many sales. Why? Because the photo depicted Gus in a pair of wet, white shorts that inadvertently became translucent because of the hectic pace of that day’s photo shot.
GO FOR A CAMPUS FEEL
Design photographs with a collegiate or athletic feel to them, rather than “beach” themed photos. If people want to buy a beach theme calendar, they will buy the “Chippendales” calendar. Even the Chippendales calendar has changed to more “bedroom themes.” Remember, buyers want YOUR calendar because it offers college guys. While college guys are seen on beaches only during Spring Break, one will usually find college guys on the school’s quad, in a fraternity house, or playing sports. So, photograph your college men where buyers expect to see college guys. Plan imagery that brings college life to mind or portrays the college student as a sexy athlete.
Remember, the successful theme of a calendars should be: “Here’s what that athletic guy you passed on the quad looks like in bed.”
RECRUIT EXTENSIVELY
Far more than 12 students must be recruited. Calendar production processes call for locating as many attractive males on your campus as possible. It is not usual to evaluate at least 125 college guys and as many as 500 during the entire process. If you want to organize a calendar, your goal should be to meet hundreds of hot college guys.
A large number must be secured because the most important issue – other than quality of photographs – is timing of delivery. Delivering early in the sales season is very important. Calendars must be produced for delivery on June 1 of each year. This allows a seven-month selling season and allows featured college guys to talk up and sell calendars during the summer (when they have ample time to sell because they are not enrolled in classes; are usually home among family and friends). It also allows sales through national magazines, and allows the producers to reach incoming freshmen college guys visiting the campus during orientation sessions, held during June through August. This means the calendar also will be on store shelves in time for students who arrive back for the beginning of fall quarter and are seeking to decorate dorm or sorority room walls.
Winter term is a poor time to recruit college guys because completing any activity takes more time due to cold weather. We cannot easily see what college guys look like because they cover themselves with clothing when outdoors. College guys generally stay indoors, become sedentary, gain weight, and do not have tans.
If only 12 college guys are recruited, the operation can be delayed if even one student drops out or is dismissed.
Recruit a large number of college guys because appearing in a calendar is not for everyone. We found that we had to screen all guys to select only those who are willing to pose nude or nearly nude. Why? Because college-oriented calendars are not the thing for timid or conservative young men. We have published many pinup calendars with varying degrees of provocativeness. Tame pinup calendars are nice. But, few buyers actually part with $15 to buy a boring male calendar. More risqué calendars have always been more popular in sales.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Here’s what to look for in a college-guy model for a pinup calendar:
• Outgoing, can sell calendars. Guys who like to talk to everyone and anyone
• Muscular or defined body
• Confident guys. Young men with self-esteem problems make problems for you.
• Comfortable posing nude, uninhibited, the kind of guy who would skinny-dip for fun or go streaking at the drop of a hat
Advertising did not bring in the “right” type of college guys. Many young men who are perfect for your calendar would never think of submitting their names to you. They must be invited. That is where student recruiters are valuable.
Advertise for a team of students whose sole duty is to stop college guys on an informal basis. Advertising to locate recruiters can include classified ads, as well as fliers to sororities, career placement offices and dorms. Aim for at least three “hard core” recruiters, a Greek system recruiter and a minority representative. Recruiters need not be female. Guys can recruit and sometimes find it easier to approach other guys in gyms, classes and on the quad. Girls sometimes thinks asking a guy to pose is like asking him for a date.
NUMBERS GAME
About 60 percent of the college guys recruiters find will be acceptable. Of those students, 75 percent will accept an offer to appear. Therefore, to secure 22 acceptable college men, recruiters should locate 50 guys per calendar.
Compensation to recruiters is a finder’s fee paid for each “found” student who appears in the published calendar. Fees are payable only if the recruited student appears in the calendar. Do not pay a finder’s fee if you do not select the college student to appear, if the college student declines your offer to appear, drops out before publication, or is dismissed for any reason.
After a college guy applies to appear in a calendar (through a website), collect a bio or tape an interview with the individual. That’s how selection of new “male models” begins!
